Understanding Ecomiles conversion rates

You have started making sustainable trips and logged journeys on foot, by train or by bike. You may have noticed that each mode generates a different amount of ecomiles. How is that calculated?
Ecomiles follows recognized carbon emission calculation methodologies, with limited assurance from KPMG. In short, the CO₂ avoided on a sustainable trip is calculated by comparing it with the same route made in a combustion vehicle.
What each kilometer is worth
To make it easier, here are the values:
| Mode of transport | Ecomiles per km | CO₂ avoided per km |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | 0.2 | 0.2 kg |
| Bike | 0.2 | 0.2 kg |
| E-bike | 0.15 | 0.15 kg |
| Electric motorcycle | 0.12 | 0.12 kg |
| Metro | 0.3 | 0.3 kg |
| Electric car | 0.12 | 0.12 kg |
| Bus | 0.1 | 0.1 kg |
| Ethanol motorcycle | 0.07 | 0.07 kg |
| Ethanol car | 0.07 | 0.07 kg |
| Carpool | 0.15 | 0.15 kg |
Each mode has a base value of CO₂ avoided per kilometer, calculated against a combustion vehicle. The amount of CO₂ avoided is converted into the app's currency: ecomiles.
So, on a 10 km bike ride, you get 2 ecomiles (10 × 0.2).
Validation criteria
Trips also go through other checks, such as travel time, the difference between start and end points, speed and distance covered. Based on all these criteria together, the trip is automatically approved or rejected after it is submitted.
Here are the numbers:
| Mode | Maximum distance | Minimum distance | Maximum speed | Maximum duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walking | 10 km | 500 m | 10 km/h | 3 h |
| Bike | 30 km | 500 m | 35 km/h | 3 h |
| E-bike | 30 km | 500 m | 50 km/h | 3 h |
| Rail (metro/train) | 100 km | 1 km | 100 km/h | 3 h |
| Bus | 500 km | 500 m | 100 km/h | 10 h |
| Car (flex/hybrid/electric) | 500 km | 500 m | 120 km/h | 5 h |
| Motorcycle (flex/electric) | 500 km | 500 m | 120 km/h | 5 h |
To be approved, a trip needs a reliability score of at least 70%. This means that even if one of the criteria is not met, the trip can still be validated in the app.
