Offsetting the carbon footprint of the commute: how it works and why it makes sense for your company

After measuring and trying to reduce emissions from employee commuting, many companies reach a residual amount that cannot be eliminated in the short term. This is where carbon offsetting comes in, a legitimate and internationally recognized tool for dealing with residual Scope 3.7 emissions.

Reduce first, offset later

Before talking about offsetting, it is worth reinforcing the correct order: diagnose, reduce, and only then offset what remains. Offsetting without first pursuing real reduction generates little credibility and can be read as greenwashing by investors, clients, and auditors. Once that work is done, however, offsetting becomes a coherent complement to the strategy.

What offsetting is and what inset is

It is important to distinguish two concepts. Carbon offsetting funds external emission reduction or removal projects, such as reforestation or renewable energy, to neutralize what the company could not avoid. Carbon inset, on the other hand, acts within the company’s own value chain, funding reductions directly tied to its operations, such as cleaner transport programs for its own employees.

How to apply this to commuting

After calculating the carbon footprint of the commute, a company can direct resources proportional to that emission toward certified offset projects, or invest in inset initiatives that improve mobility for its own employees, such as subsidies for low-carbon transport. The two approaches are complementary and can coexist within the same strategy.

The gain beyond the report

Companies that structure this step transparently strengthen their position in ESG reports, respond better to client and investor due diligence, and communicate their sustainability commitment more concretely. It is a step that closes the cycle started with diagnosis and reduction.

If your company already measures commuting and wants to move forward with reducing and offsetting these emissions, Ecomilhas can help structure this process end to end. Talk to our team and learn about our CCO2 and RCO2e options.
